This club targets the First Lego League (FLL) Challenge Competition in the beginning of December (Competition date TBA - potential date is Dec 6/7/13/14). Students will work in teams of 6 to:

  • Work on an Innovation Project - research the problem question; propose a solution; create an engaging presentation describing their solution and how it solves the problem.
  • Design, Build and Code a Spike Prime robot for the robot game, present their robot design process.
  • Practice the Core Values of FLL and create a presentation that demonstrates how this was done during the season.

First Lego League Info

This is a fast-paced competition club, and requires commitment both during club hours, and also outside at home. There will be take home assignments that must be completed. Teams that are fortunate to make it to the next competition in Jan and/or Feb typically dedicate their time only to FLL from Sep - Feb.

If you are not familiar with FLL, please check out the various youtube channels and info. If you and your student do not have the bandwidth for the commitment, the spring exploratory club may be a better fit

Registration

This year the registration process will be different to provide more equitable chances for students to apply. Please be patient as we work out these new processes.

Application Forms will be available for students and parents to fill in and sign. This will be available either at the Info Night or online below.

Completed application forms must be hand-delivered to Mr. Burke during his tutorial. The deadline is Thurs Sep 18 4:00 pm. The club is limited to 24 students overall including some returning members. There are a limited number of spots available each year because the club involves hands-on engineering, strict safety requirements and competition-level projects. To ensure that students have a meaningful and safe experience, we are using the following PTSA board approved selection process.

All fully completed applications will be entered into a lottery, which will be conducted by Mr. Burke, the coaches, and a board member on Friday, September 19th, at 5pm. Only students who submit a completed form (including student form and parent form) will be eligible for the lottery.

Club acceptance notifications, along with a payment link, will be emailed on Friday Sep 19 at 8pm. Payment must be completed by Sunday Sep 20 at 5pm otherwise we will assume your student is no longer interested and we will offer the spot to the next waitlisted person picked via lottery. No exceptions will be made.

Application Deadline: Thursday, Sep 18 4:00 pm Mr. Burke's Room (1304)

Completed Application Dropoff: In-person to Mr. Burke in room 1304

Application Download Link: 25-26 Application Form

Club fee: $300 per student, non-refundable

  • The initial club fee of $300 covers only up to the first FLL qualifier in December. If the team advances to the next level, an additional fee applies (same as other clubs/sports).
  • Attendance is mandatory. We will start with 2 days a week (Tue/Thurs 4 - 6 pm) and add a 3rd day (Sat morning - time TBD likely 9 - 11am) Oct/Nov - Dec.
  • We are looking for committed students who are interested in FLL robotics - no prior experience is necessary, just a passion for learning and doing. Being able to meet the attendance requirements is a prerequisite. Any misbehavior, absence without prior notification, not completing assigned homework, lack of participation in club activities will count as a strike. Accumulating 4 strikes throughout the year will result in removal from the club.
  • All parents are expected to volunteer, each team requires 2 parent coaches who will also attend the meetings. Parents must also ensure that students complete their required homework. Parents must not complete or do any of the work for their students.
  • All parents are expected to sign up to bring snacks and drinks for the entire club. A SignupGenius form will be circulated once club members are decided.
  • Parents are expected to drop off and pick up students on time during meetings and competition/s.

* PTSA Membership required prior to registration, please renew here if you haven't done so already.
